Peak-A-Bo I See You!

The Submitter wrote:  “had some problems with the pipes behind the single-piece shower insert. It was either this, or remove the insert entirely. By the way, it was installed BEFORE the walls were put up and it won’t fit thru the door without cutting it up. Had to seal the hole up with something, right? At least now, we’ll know if the pipe is leaking again!”

  7. I think it’s F’n brilliant! Just a shame he didn’t cut the hole a little neater. Now you can see the rodents running around the wall cavities too. :-)

  9. I think someone needs to let the professionals handle their next job. I guess he is lucky it’s not something electrical, but damn I would be laughing if I was called in to fix his screw up.

  11. I can assure you there are NO rodents in my house.
I’d like to see a professional fix a pipe behind a fiberglass wall he can’t see through. He would say pull the whole tub out and it won’t fit through the door. As it is now, everything is re-sealed, watertight and working properly. This was an emergency fix that will buy us some time until we can get a new shower insert. Besides, this is the spare bathroom, it’s not like everybody coming in can see this.

And I’m not a “he”. When is the last time you heard a dude call himself “bitchy”?

  13. A professional would cut a hole in the sheetrock on the other side of the wall and leave the shower intact. Then patching sheetrock is no problem.

  15. the other bathroom is on the opposite side of that wall. And guess what…. there’s another shower insert there.

Just so ya know, the patched tub originally had a 3rd knob between the hot and cold. That diverter valve in the middle was leaking. Went to replace just the valve itself (without cutting a hole) but it was installed improperly to begin with and required the whole shebang to be removed. Decided to go with a 2 knob design and relocate the diverter valve to the spigot.

  17. They do make cover plates specifically for that, though it might be hard to find one for a two handle application. I’ve found some for three handles (which personally I much prefer over that two handle style) but most are for one handle setups (which I absolutely hate).

  21. Dude, check it out, Lowes is open 7 days a week. Dont be so freakin cheap! Been there done that only >I< took advantage of the situation and remodeled my bathroom…DOH!

  23. no money for remodel at the moment :( so the clear plexiglass patch was the next best thing Lowes had to offer. Whole thing will get re-done soon as cash comes available. Whole house is a fixer-upper and haven’t gotten to that bathroom yet. But in the meantime I still have a usable shower.
