PBR ‘Festivus’ pole next to Nativity

Nothing like bringing in the holidays with a 8 ft tall Pabst Blue Ribbon ‘Festivus’ pole right next to baby Jesus and the Nativity!  In case you were wondering that is 23 beer cans stacked up!

From The Sun Sentinel:

DEERFIELD BEACH Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus have graced the corner of Hillsboro Boulevard and Federal Highway every December for more than 20 years.

This year, they’re joined by an 8-foot-tall aluminum Festivus Pole, symbol of a Dec. 23 atheist “holiday” that became a pop culture hit after being featured in a “Seinfeld” episode.

“It’s just 23 beer cans stacked 8 feet high and conveniently located 6 feet from Baby Jesus,” said activist blogger Chaz Stevens, who installed it Thursday with the city’s permission.

Stevens said he has been trying unsuccessfully for five years to get the city to take down the Nativity scene. So this year he asked for space to express his own unreligious beliefs.

“Think of how many people have died over the years to give us our freedoms,” Stevens said. “So I’ve got to push back a little.”

City Attorney Andrew Maroudis declined to comment.

But Marc Rohr, a law professor at Nova Southeastern University called the display an unusual move. “I think the atheists of the world are more interested in preventing religious displays than in joining them.”

  1. Anyone who tries to get nativity scenes taken down is an absolute dick. There is literally no reason to do it. Its only up for a few months just put the fuck up with it.

  3. Stevens is such an idiot that he doesn’t even realize that Atheism is actually a religion. It all comes down to a little bit of mutual respect. And Atheists like Stevens have no respect for anyone else.

Stevens also likes to point out that people have dies to ensure our freedoms. That includes the right to free religious expression. I guess that happens only if you agree with Stevens’ point of view.

  5. People like Chaz Stevens must live very miserable lives. It i sunbelievable how some people go out of their way to take the joy in life away from the vast majority for their own selfish, self-serving needs. I’ve always felt sorry for atheists but Chaz Stevens is obviously beyond hope.

  9. Who said that Festivus was an atheist holiday? George’s dad got tired of the commercialization of christmas so he created festivus.

As an atheist, I don’t care if people want to put up religious ‘stuff’ because it doesn’t actually affect me in anyway. What does bother me is when religious people are offended by our beliefs and so on. We all have the same rights. Furthermore, most religious people judge us as well as others, that’s a sin.

  13. Kidd, THANK YOU. As a guy who isn’t an atheist, but is kinda put off by all the bullshit of organized religion, I’ve come to respect only a few atheists. It seems most atheists are more in the camp of this guy, people I call Anti-theists. They are not simply without religion, they actively and openly oppose it on the simple grounds of its existence. You, sir, have reminded me that even godless heathens can be good people.
