My stereo is “cooler” than yours…

The submitter wrote:  I built this for camping, fishing, etc…    My buddies and I weren’t satisfied with an underpowered boombox powered by D batteries. It’s essentially a car stereo powered by a car battery stuffed in a cooler. It has a solar charger and battery gauge. Pretty damn awesome if I say so myself (I may be a little biased though).

  7. Now Stage II needs to be built. Same system, but this time on one of those wheeled coolers. That thing has to have some serious weight behind it.

  9. I agree with Troy20. Plus it would also then have room for the ice and such.

  15. @ Caucasian Cousin, this is my stereo and we camp at a private pond…. we don’t take it to public camping and fully respect others. We also enjoy the sounds of nature as well. You shouldn’t judge without knowing.
For everyone else, thanks for the positive remarks. It works great and is a hit!
The solar panel came from Harbor Freight. The whole system generates too much heat to feasibly be used as a cooler too, and it weighs about 50 pounds.

  17. Brilliant! Not seeing the inside, the construction looks tidy. I love the recharger – that could be turned to other practical uses in a pinch.

  19. 2 mods I would make. 1 – add a power inverter. 2 – add additional solar panels.

If you’ve got HF’s 5 watt panel you’re getting only .42 amps of charge current in full sun – not a lot to charge a car battery. At that rate, you’d need 2 hours 20 minutes of full sun for every amp hour of current draw to recharge the battery. Otherwise I love it.

  23. That is b*d*ss. Add a plug to charge your cell phone, maybe an MP3 hookup on the radio. Or a plug to charge batteries for your tools on a jobsite. You need to sell that. This isn’t Redneck…it’s genious!
