  11. In 1983 I bought a Chevy Truck with this camper already on it. My family and I spent many summers traveling across the country, camping in State and National Parks. It was a real happy time in the world back then. The sparkle in everyone’s eyes when they would hear it was time to head out to the wilderness is unforgettable. It was real nice when the kids were a bit older and could go out on hikes by themselves and my wife and I could spend some time in the loft snuggling together. Our youngest two were conceived right there inside that camper. One in Yosemite and the other at the Grand Canyon. Man, what wonderful memories.

A few years back my wife met someone online and started having an affair. I found out about it too late. She left soon after. We were equal bread winners and her departure left me unable to make mortgage payments on the house anymore. Then the bank came and took the house and pretty much everything else we had. Leaving me with 4 kids, the truck and this camper.

The economy collapsed and I lost my job, leaving me with nothing but the truck and camper.

My friend owned a small piece of rural property we use to go hunting on and he let me park my truck out there for a few months, when one night coming “home” from buying groceries the truck slid off the road on his property and broke the axle and drive shaft.

We were able to get a front-loader out here to pull it out of the mud, but the camper no longer sat well on it at that angle so We decided to just park the camper permanently while the truck was being worked on. I got word one day that my truck was ready to come and pick up only to find out that it was stolen 10 minutes before I got there. The mechanic took responsibility for that and we settled on an amount that I could buy another used truck for, but I noticed he had some left-over building supplies from a recent expansion project.

With the kids all getting older and the space so limited in the camper, I decided to make a deal for his leftovers and transportation back and forth with the materials. As you see we’ve now added on another room and extended the loft inside and the 5 of us sleep pretty well, keeping fairly warm in the close quarters.

Hopefully the economy will turn around and I can get back on my feet enough to finish off the siding this next spring. Glad to see y’all like my place.

  23. I think this is a lovely Christmas home. The story above is heart warming. The house is small and rural. Seems like the American dream to me. We Americans spend too much time thinking about things and how they should look. The fact is, home is something so wonderful that it’s indescribable. Good on ya, Mister for making a home. Peace be with you, now and forever. PS – I am praying for good employment for you.
